The Challenge of Our Nation: Immigration

On Saturday, December 1st,  from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM, an immigration debate will be held at  Sudakoff Center on New College of Florida campus, located on the east side of N. Tamiami Trail on General Spaatz Blvd.  The panelists include State Rep. Keith Fitzgerald, District 69, State Rep. Juan Zapata, district 119, Jim Delgado, former president of the Gulf Coast Latin Chamber of Commerce, Wade Matthews, vice president of Floridians for a Sustainable Population, and David W. Caulkett, vice president of Floridians for Immigration Enforcement.  Tom Tryon, editor of the Sarasota-Herald Tribune will be the moderator.  The sponsoring organizations are the New College Democrats, Info Shop, Democratic Club of Sarasota,  Sarasota-Manatee Farmworker Supporters, Unitarian Universalist Church Social Justice Committee, Our Lady of Angels Social Justice Committee, Latino Community Network, and the Hispanic Latino Coalition. Issues to be discussed include the Dream Act, economic consequences of immigration, and population growth as an effect of immigration.  After the debate among the panelists, there will be a question and answer session.  The main purpose of this event is to provide a forum for dialogue for differing points of view, and to restore civility to public discourse on the immigration issue.  The event is free and open to the public.
