May 1, 2008: Reclaim the Streets in protest of the war!

Sarasota, Florida

On May Day, the international worker's holiday, longshore workers in the US are organizing to shut down major ports on the west coast in protest of the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. You can learn more about their action here: http://sbindymedia.org/for_workers_strikes_against_the_war

In solidarity with workers shutting down shipping lanes, we will shut down the street and hold a Reclaim the Streets party to send a strong message: Until the war ends, there will be no business as usual!

The atmosphere will be festive, with:
- Dancing
- Music
- Games
- Free Food
- Street Art
- Street Theater

Bring toys, games, costumes, art supplies, banners, and other implements of merrymaking!

Norman Finklestein comes to Sarasota!

Norman Finkelstein will be delivering a lecture on the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine. Pasted below is Finkelstein biography from his website:

Norman G. Finkelstein received his doctorate in 1988 from the Department of Politics, Princeton University, for a thesis on the theory of Zionism. He most recently taught political theory at DePaul University in Chicago.

Finkelstein is the author of five books:

Beyond Chutzpah: On the misuse of anti-Semitism and the abuse of history (University of California Press, August 2005)

The Holocaust Industry: Reflections on the exploitation of Jewish suffering (Verso: 2000; expanded second edition, 2003); an international bestseller, it has been translated into twenty four foreign languages

WHAT: Vern Buchanan will be speaking to our community with guest...Senator Mel Martinez.

WHEN: This Saturday.......May 31, 3-5 pm

WHERE: Sailor Circus, 2075 Bahia Vista St., Sarasota, FL 34239

Here is our take: We will be outside of Sailor Circus with signs and banners expressing our dismay of

the continuation of war that both Buchanan and Martinez support. If you would like to attend the

event inside, it will be $10.00 at the door.

and ideas.
